چکیده

A parameter estimation method is developed for both transient and steady-state flow models based on genetic algorithms (GAs), one of the increasingly popular global optimization methods. Since GA is independent of the nature of the simulation model and the form of the objective function, any flow simulation code can be used for the forward modelling. The US Geological Survey modular flow simulator MODFLOW is used in this study. The objective function in the GAbased method can be highly complex and nonlinear, and various types of constraints can be readily incorporated. A two-dimensional model is investigated in this study, and theoretical observation data are obtained at selected model nodes by running the forward model with true parameters. Gaussian random noises are added to the theoretical observation data to represent the measurement errors. The results from a series of numerical experiments and a comparison with the GaussNewton method indicate that the GA-based method works well for both noise-free and noisy data. However, a large number of forward simulation runs may be required for convergence of the GA solution.

Simultaneous estimation of transmissivity values and zonation

The extended Kalman filter (EKF) has long been recognized as a powerful, yet computationally intensive, methodology for stochastic parameter estimation. Three improvements to traditional algorithms are presented and applied to heterogeneous transmissivity estimation. First, the costly EKF covariance updates are replaced by more efficient approximations. Second, the zonation structure of the dis...

Management of groundwater resources of Mahvelat-Faizabad aquifer and evaluation of extent of saline water zone using numerical simulation

The unmanaged groundwater extraction and inadequate aquifer recharge is the major cause of groundwater depletion in different parts of the world. In this study, the groundwater flow system of Mahvelat-Feizabad aquifer (NE of Iran) has been numerically simulated using MODFLOW code in the GMS interface. The model, primarily, calibrated for steady state condition for the mean hydraulic values of o...

Steady shape analysis of tomographic pumping tests for characterization of aquifer heterogeneities

[1] Hydraulic tomography, a procedure involving the performance of a suite of pumping tests in a tomographic format, provides information about variations in hydraulic conductivity at a level of detail not obtainable with traditional well tests. However, analysis of transient data from such a suite of pumping tests represents a substantial computational burden. Although steady state responses c...
